Ford issues recall of 1 million vehicles due to rearview camera failure (Instagram @ford)
Ford is issuing a recall of just over one million vehicles in the United States due to an issue with the rearview camera.
The defect causes the central screen of the entertainment system to display a frozen image or go black when shifting into reverse, which can increase the risk of accidents. The recall involves several models from the Ford and Lincoln brands, including F-150 trucks, Bronco SUVs, Transit vans, and others.
The cause of the problem was identified as a fault in the Sync 4 software, specifically in versions of the Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM), which manages the system’s wireless communication. Ford began investigating the issue earlier this year and plans to fix the defect through a software update.
Vehicles with over-the-air (OTA) update capability will receive the fix automatically, while others will need to visit a dealership service for the update.
So far, Ford has recorded only one minor accident related to this defect and no reports of injuries caused by the rearview camera issue.
Official recall notifications will be sent to owners around mid-June. Until the repair is made, drivers should continue to use traditional rearview mirrors to assist with maneuvers.
